Roman Fresco Fragment

Roman polychrome painted fresco fragment depicting a still life scene with three figs in a red and crimson bordered panel, on a black painted ground, with a band of green leafy vine sprigs beneath and foliate pillars and garlands on either side. Mounted in grout on a wooden frame.

  • John Wise (renowned dealer specialised in pre-Columbian art who owned a personal collection of classical antiquities), New York, acquired from the above in the early 1970's
  • Ex private collection of Walter Banko, acquired from the above, acquired from the above in the early 1980's, Mr Wise was a renown dealer who specialized in Pre Columbian (he and his wife Nora had a personal collection of classical antiquities many of which he bought from New York dealer Mathias Komor.
  • Acquired at Bonhams, consigned by the above, London, 29th April 2009, lot 27
