Monumental Roman Portrait Head of Augustus

Deaccessioned at Christie's London, Mougjns Museum of Classical Art sale, 7th December 2023. Colossal marble portrait head of emperor Augustus. Roman, Julio-Claudian period. Discovered near Quinsac in the Bordeaux region of France between 1880 and 1885.

  • Found near Quinsac in the Périgord region between 1880 and 1885, in the same family since then – the head was found whilst ploughing the field of the family property
  • Consigned by a member of the above-mentioned family to Périgord Enchères – Périgord Estimations
