  • Acquired by Ambassador Battle, Egypt, between 1964 and 1967, Lucius D. Battle (1918-2008) served as First Secretary in the US Embassy in Copenhagen from 1953 to 1955, as president of Colonial Williamsburg from 1956 to 1960, as Executive Secretary in the State Department from 1960 to 1962, as Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Culture from 1962 to 1964, and as Ambassador to Egypt from1964 to 1967. After working in the private sector from 1968 to 1980, with a three-year interruption as President of the Middle East Institute (1973-1975), Ambassador Battle started the Foreign Policy Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and finished his career as President of the Middle East Institute from 1986 until his retirement in 1990. Thence by descent to the previous owners
